Key result
Prolonged sitting in mild hypercapnia reduces popliteal artery FMD by ~49% versus normal ambient conditions.
Why the study?
Does prolonged sitting with mild hypercapnia exacerbate peripheral endothelial and microvascular dysfunction compared to prolonged sitting alone in healthy recreationally active adults?
Population
Healthy recreationally active adults

Does prolonged sitting with mild hypercapnia exacerbate peripheral endothelial and microvascular dysfunction compared to prolonged sitting alone in healthy recreationally active adults?
Absolute Event Rate: 2.5% vs 4.9%
p-value: p=<0.05
Mild hypercapnia, common in everyday environments, worsens the negative impacts of prolonged sitting on vascular function in healthy adults.
Headid et al. (2020) conducted an RCT in Healthy recreationally active adults (n=12). Prolonged sitting with mild hypercapnia vs. Prolonged sitting in normal atmospheric conditions was evaluated on Post-sitting popliteal artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) (p=<0.05). Prolonged sitting in mild hypercapnic conditions significantly exacerbated the reduction in popliteal artery flow-mediated dilation to 2.5% compared to 4.9% in normal ambient conditions.
