In this paper, student-teacher dialog about works of art is discussed and illustrated. The dialog is a process in which a qualified teacher guides students in responding to art works. The process, based on Ingarden's analysis of art appreciation and Beardsley's discussion of art criticism, consists of three stages: Impression, Expression, and Commitment. In these stages, students are guided in initially grasping a work's pervasive quality, describing and interpreting the work's parts and relations, and contemplating and judging the overall expression of the work. The entire process is illustrated using Rousseau's painting The Dream.
