The Casimir effect is discussed and calculated using covariant methods. Ford's results (see Phys. Rev., vol.D11, p.3370 (1975)) on vacuum energy in curved space are considered and criticized from the point of view of non-covariance. The relevance of the 'conformal anomaly' of Fulling and Davies (1976) is noted.
