This article series introduces core tenets of Quality Improvement (QI) and their application in vascular surgery.
Series Note: Early in 2020, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) announced the creation of a "Quality Improvement Committee" (QIC).One goal of the QIC is to establish a common understanding of the core tenets of Quality Improvement (QI) and how the SVS membership can apply these principles to improve the quality of care for patients undergoing vascular procedures. The QIC enlisted a team of experts in the field to author a five-part article series; each article covers a key concept of QI.These articles are intended to be high-yield and an introduction to, rather than a comprehensive review of, key QI concepts and issues. The series includes: (1) a definition of QI, ( 2) examples of QI initiatives pertinent to the field of surgery, (3) education on methods of measuring and reporting improvement, (4) consideration of why and how QI can be taught to vascular trainees, and finally, (5) potential applications of QI and improvement science for the future.
