Area sampling is subject to appreciable error due to interviewer performance, even in a carefully supervised survey. This conclusion is suggested by the following study, which finds that interviewers can easily make conscious or unconscious errors in listing dwelling units and in the selection of the sample of dwelling units. There is also a possibility of interviewer error in the selection of individuals within dwelling units.
