Healthcare professionals in Iran face significant barriers, including communication gaps and staffing shortages, in providing end-of-life care for heart failure patients.
These barriers warrant clinician awareness in HF end-of-life care; leaves open generalizability and need for prospective studies.
Heart failure (HF) presents profound challenges for patients and healthcare providers alike, particularly at the end of life. Despite ongoing discussions within professional circles about the need for guidelines in end‐of‐life care for HF patients, clear directives remain elusive. This study delves into the experiences of physicians and nurses in a major university hospital in Iran, aiming to shed light on the barriers to delivering compassionate end‐of‐life care in this context. Through semistructured interviews with eight physicians and 12 nurses from cardiology and emergency departments, we uncovered a variety of themes, from the complexities of medication discontinuation and financial worries to the critical need for effective communication among healthcare teams, patients, and their families. Nurses underscored their vital role in patient education and voiced concerns over inadequate staffing affecting service quality. Our findings highlight the urgent necessity to establish comprehensive support systems within healthcare settings to enhance the quality of end‐of‐life care for HF patients. By addressing these challenges, we can strive to improve the final stages of life for those impacted by HF.
