Background: Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder that is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Diabetes causes many microvascular and macrovascular complications. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is among the most dangerous complications of DM. Pathways involved in the progression of DN include oxidative stress, angiotensin II, and inflammatory processes. Omentin-1 improves insulin sensitivity by increasing insulin-dependent glucose absorption in adipose tissue cells in the visceral, subcutaneous, and liver muscles. Objective: To measure the serum omentin-1 level in type-II diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy or without nephropathy. Subjects and Methods: This case-control involved 90 participants: 60 are type-II diabetics and 30 healthy control group. 30 of the patients have DN, and 30 have not. Each group has 15 male individuals and 15 female individuals. Results: Omentin-1 level is found to be lower in type II diabetic patients with DN than in diabetic patients without DN. Conclusion: Omentin-1 is significantly lower in type II diabetic patients with DN than in type II diabetic patients without DN, which is lower than that of healthy controls.
