Synthesize evidence on the physical, psychological, and operational challenges as well as positive outcomes experienced by military, medical, and public safety personnel supporting natural disaster relief operations.
Conducted a systematic review evaluating documented challenges and positive experiences of responder personnel deployed to natural disaster settings.
Identified and analyzed data from 382 published studies evaluating medical workers, humanitarian volunteers, and military personnel.
Structural challenges involving infrastructure and institutional interactions were the most commonly reported difficulties, followed by resource limitations, psychological, physical, and social challenges.
Over 60% of the 382 included studies documented positive or transformative outcomes, including self-growth, fulfillment, and the acquisition of additional resources, support, and training.
