Evaluates text interpretation in pairs in an online theology course, suggesting effective community building strategies.
The required first‐year MDiv course “Learning Community” begins in‐person for both remote and on‐campus students during an August intensive but splits off into online and in‐person sections for the remainder of the fall semester. Continuing to cultivate this learning community in a large online course calls for distinctive pedagogical strategies. One teaching innovation, Text Interpretation in Pairs (TIIP), developed for this online section, draws on a model of havruta text study to encourage students to engage weekly in textual, interpersonal, and intrapersonal practices with an assigned partner as a building block for cultivating a learning community.
