Comprehensive review examines polymer modification effects on mechanical properties in cement-based materials, indicating enhanced performance for modern constructions.
Polymer modification of cement mortar and concrete has been widely practiced for more than seven decades, leading to significant advancements in the development of high-performance construction materials. The incorporation of polymer-based admixtures enhances the mechanical, durability, and workability characteristics of conventional cementitious materials. Due to their improved strength, adhesion, impermeability, and cost-effectiveness, polymer-modified mortars and concretes have gained extensive applications in modern construction and repair works. This study presents a comprehensive review of the classification and functions of various polymer-based admixtures, including polymer latexes, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, and liquid polymers. The paper further discusses the principles of polymer modification and their influence on the fresh and hardened properties of mortar and concrete. Special emphasis is given to workability, compressive strength, flexural strength, bonding behavior, and durability performance. In addition, recent developments and research trends related to polymer-modified cementitious composites are highlighted to provide insights into future applications in sustainable and high-performance construction technologies.
