This essay explores the phenomenon of interdependence in world systems1 from three separate perspectives. To begin, it attempts to pin down and clarify the concept interdependence. Secondly, it assesses the debate on the factual question of whether the level of interdependence is rising or falling in the contemporary world system. Finally, it offers a number of hypotheses dealing with the links between systemic interdependencies (as an independent variable) and various aspects of world politics.
