Key result
Short HRV biofeedback increases total HRV power and curbs sympathetic activity in adolescents.
Why the study?
The study aimed to determine electroencephalogram responses during a heart rate variability biofeedback session in adolescents with different risks of Internet addiction.
Does a single session of heart rate variability biofeedback alter EEG and HRV parameters in adolescents with different risks of Internet addiction?
Observational (n=100)
Does a single session of heart rate variability biofeedback alter EEG and HRV parameters in adolescents with different risks of Internet addiction?
p-value: p=<0.001
A single session of heart rate variability biofeedback effectively increases parasympathetic tone and alters brain bioelectrical activity in adolescents, with distinct EEG patterns depending on their risk of Internet addiction.

Single-session HRV biofeedback was associated with autonomic shifts in adolescents; hypothesis-generating for EEG differences by Internet addiction risk, requiring RCTs before practice change.
Демин et al. (2022) conducted an observational in Internet Addiction Risk (n=100). Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV BF) vs. Baseline (rest) was evaluated on Total power (TP) of the HRV spectrum and EEG spectral power (p=<0.001). A single 5-minute heart rate variability biofeedback session significantly increased total power of the HRV spectrum and decreased sympathetic activity across all adolescents, while eliciting the least brain reactivity in the beta1 EEG band among those with a stable pattern of Internet addiction.
