Key result
Atrial tachycardia pacing induces AF in ~83% of beagles and increases atrial fibrosis.
Why the study?
Does atrial tachycardia pacing using an external right atrium pacemaker induce atrial fibrillation and atrial fibrosis in beagles?
Does atrial tachycardia pacing using an external right atrium pacemaker induce atrial fibrillation and atrial fibrosis in beagles?
A modified beagle model using an external right atrium pacemaker successfully induces atrial fibrillation and structural remodeling, providing a cost-effective model for AF research.
Offers practical beagle AF model; extends preclinical tools but leaves clinical translation open.
real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot analysis of connective tissue growth factor, collagen I, and collagen III. Results: In the atrial tachycardia pacing group, atrial fibrillation was induced in five beagles (83.3%); the left atrium enlarged significantly; more canines had mitral regurgitation; and the Masson's staining, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot results demonstrated more obvious fibrosis of the left atrium. Conclusion: The modified beagle model of atrial fibrillation using a right atrium pacemaker outside the body was effective, increased connective tissue growth factor and collagen I messenger ribonucleic acid overexpression, and induced atrial fibrosis.

Yang et al. (2020) studied Atrial fibrillation (n=12). Atrial tachycardia pacing (ATP) using an external right atrium pacemaker vs. No pacemaker (control) was evaluated on Induction of atrial fibrillation. Atrial tachycardia pacing using an external right atrium pacemaker successfully induced atrial fibrillation in 83.3% of beagles and significantly increased atrial fibrosis.
