Key result
In hypertensive post-menopausal women, exercise training with ARBs produced pronounced responses in awake ambulatorial systolic BP, while β-blockers yielded greater responses in BP variability.
Why the study?
To verify the influence of beta-blockers or angiotensin receptor blockers on cardiovascular responses to exercise training in hypertensive post-menopausal women.
Does 12 weeks of combined exercise training elicit different cardiovascular responses in hypertensive post-menopausal women receiving beta-blockers versus angiotensin receptor blockers?

Does 12 weeks of combined exercise training elicit different cardiovascular responses in hypertensive post-menopausal women receiving beta-blockers versus angiotensin receptor blockers?
In hypertensive post-menopausal women, exercise training mitigates BP reactivity to stress regardless of antihypertensive class, though ARBs and beta-blockers differentially affect ambulatorial BP and BP variability.

Differential ambulatory BP and variability responses to exercise with ARBs versus β-blockers are hypothesis-generating; larger trials needed before guiding therapy.
AIM: To verify the influence of β-blockers or angiotensin receptor blockers on cardiovascular responses to exercise training in hypertensive post-menopausal women. METHODS: = 19). Before and after 12 weeks of combined (aerobic and resistance) exercise training they were evaluated by: heart rate (HR) and its variability (HRV), blood pressure (BP) under stress (Cold pressor and Stroop color tests), and ambulatorial BP and its variability. RESULTS: = .001; ΔARB = 0.1 ± 0.8; ΔBB = -0.4 ± 1.5; ΔCON = 1.0 ± 1.7). CONCLUSION: ARB present pronounced responses in awake ambulatorial systolic BP, while β-blockers users present greater responses in BP variability. Besides that, exercise can mitigate BP reactivity to stress with no differences between groups. Lastly, there were no major differences in HRV. TRIAL REGISTRY AT “CLINICALTRIALS.GOV”: NCT03529838.

Mariano et al. (2022) conducted an RCT in Hypertension in post-menopausal women (n=19). Combined (aerobic and resistance) exercise training with ARBs or β-blockers vs. Control group was evaluated on Cardiovascular responses (HR, HRV, BP under stress, ambulatorial BP and variability) (p=0.001). In hypertensive post-menopausal women, exercise training with ARBs produced pronounced responses in awake ambulatorial systolic BP, while β-blockers yielded greater responses in BP variability.
