Population

19,258 patients with hypertension (n=15,258 in the before-JNC 7 cohort, n=4,000 in the after-JNC 7 cohort) from 27 provider groups and managed care organizations in the United States. Mean age 61.6 (before) and 63.9 (after), predominantly female (55.3% and 59.8%).

Intervention

Hypertension management and pharmacotherapy after the release of the JNC 7 guidelines (June 1, 2003, to December 31, 2006)

Comparator

Hypertension management and pharmacotherapy before the release of the JNC 7 guidelines (January 1, 1998, to May 31, 2003)

Outcome

Blood pressure control defined by prevailing JNC criteria (JNC 6 for the before-cohort, JNC 7 for the after-cohort)surrogate

Limitations

Differences in cohort characteristics (after-JNC 7 cohort was older with more comorbidities)
Sampling bias from independent samples across multiple sites
