Why the study?
It was unknown whether muscle metaboreflex activation stimulates the cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex, thereby amplifying muscle metaboreflex responses.
Does removal of the CSAR afferents attenuate the strength of the muscle metaboreflex in normal subjects and subjects with heart failure?
Does removal of the CSAR afferents attenuate the strength of the muscle metaboreflex in normal subjects and subjects with heart failure?
The cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex amplifies the muscle metaboreflex, a mechanism that is present in both normal conditions and heart failure.
Findings in animal models extend metaboreflex mechanisms; leaves open human therapeutic relevance.
demand imbalance. Muscle metaboreflex activation (MMA) simultaneously elicits coronary vasoconstriction (which is augmented in heart failure) and profound increases in cardiac work thereby upsetting oxygen balance. Whether MMA activates the CSAR thereby amplifying MMA responses is unknown. We observed that removal of the CSAR afferents attenuated the strength of the muscle metaboreflex in normal and subjects with heart failure.
