The significance, the function, and the organisation of protected-area management have strongly changed since the 1970s, a development which is linked to global and regional change. UNESCO Biosphere Reserves based on the Sevilla strategy, and Regional Nature Parks represent a new, integrative perspective on man-environment relationship. Biosphere Reserves and Regional Nature Parks can be considered as models of sustainable regional and landscape development. The theoretical basis, the practical experiences, and the analysis of the existing potentials indicate that the two concepts foster a transdisciplinary regional management, which can create various impacts in the three dimensions of sustainable development.
