Describes the experience of establishing a nurse-led outpatient clinic for the long-term follow-up of patients after heart valve surgery.
Supports nurse-led models for post-valve surgery follow-up; hypothesis-generating for outcomes and scalability trials.
Surgery remains the treatment of choice for most significant heart valve lesions. Although potentially life-threatening complications can develop long after surgery to replace diseased heart valves, many patients do not receive regular follow-up in specialist care. At present, there is no consensus on best practice regarding timing of follow-up appointments. This article relates the experience of setting up a nurse-led outpatients clinic for long-term follow-up of patients following valve surgery.
