Abstract

Urban green waste in Taiwan, such as fallen leaves, weeds, and branches, is largely sent to incineration or landfilling due to insufficient composting capacity and unclear sorting, resulting in resource waste and increased carbon emissions. This study proposes LEAF LOOP, a semi-automated on-site composting system designed to improve urban green waste management efficiency. The system employs shredding, stirring, moisture control, and ventilation to accelerate decomposition and produce organic fertilizer, which is directly returned to the soil to enhance plant health and ecological cycles. Compared with conventional centralized collection, LEAF LOOP reduces transportation needs and operational costs, lowers carbon footprint, and aligns with the "zero-waste resource circulation" and "2050 net-zero emissions" policies. Its simple operation and adaptable design also allow integration with community engagement and environmental education, raising public awareness and participation in resource recycling. Results indicate that LEAF LOOP has strong potential for promotion and could become an effective solution for urban green space management and low-carbon transformation.
