There are several similarities between general relativity and classical electromagnetism, and these lead us to ask whether gravitational waves, like electromagnetic waves, have a real existence. Fundamental difficulties, due to the covariant nature of general relativity, arise in definition of a gravitational wave. In this article the two contemporary approaches to the problem are reviewed.
