Does inorganic nitrate supplementation combined with acute exercise improve flow-mediated dilation in postmenopausal females?
Inorganic nitrate supplementation combined with high-intensity exercise acutely improves vascular endothelial function in postmenopausal females.
Supports acute endothelial benefits from combined nitrate-exercise in postmenopausal females; extends nitrate evidence to exercise contexts.
This study compared exercise-induced changes in flow-mediated dilation after acute moderate- and high-intensity exercise in females postmenopause supplementing either inorganic nitrate (beetroot juice) or placebo. BRJ improved peak ΔFMD postexercise, and BRJ + HIE increased FMD measured as FMD over time. Neither PL + MIE nor PL + HIE improved FMD. These findings suggest that inorganic nitrate supplementation combined with high-intensity exercise may benefit vascular health in females PM.

Hogwood et al. (2023) conducted an RCT in Postmenopause. Inorganic nitrate (beetroot juice) and acute moderate- or high-intensity exercise vs. Placebo was evaluated on Exercise-induced changes in flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Inorganic nitrate supplementation (beetroot juice) combined with high-intensity exercise improved flow-mediated dilation in postmenopausal females, whereas placebo did not.
