66 consecutive male non-diabetic patients who underwent coronary angiography for suspected or known coronary atherosclerosis at Fukuoka University Hospital. Exclusions: spastic angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure (Killip Class ≥2 after AMI), hepatic dysfunction, vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, familial hypercholesterolemia, thyroid dysfunction, or adrenal dysfunction.

Severity of coronary atherosclerosis defined by both Gensini's score (GS) and the number of significantly stenosed vesselssurrogate

Insulin resistance is significantly associated with the angiographic severity of coronary heart disease in non-diabetic men, independent of the specific location of the coronary lesions.

Limitations

  • Limited to patients who have a greater-than-zero Gensini's score
  • Used HOMA IR as a simple alternative rather than the gold-standard euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique
