What is the level of knowledge regarding oral anticoagulant therapy among hospitalized cardiology patients?
Hospitalized cardiology patients on oral anticoagulants demonstrate significant knowledge deficits regarding drug and nutrient interactions, indicating a need for improved patient education.
OBJECTIVE: Objective: This descriptive study was conducted in order to determine the knowledge levels of patients using oral anticoagulant drugs regarding the treatment. METHODS: Method: While the population of the study consisted of 108 individuals hospitalized in the cardiology clinic of a university and receiving oral anticoagulant treatment between September 2013 and November 2013; the sample group consisted of 97 patients who accepted to participate in the study. The data were collected by using a questionnaire involving two parts. While the first part of the questionnaire included questions about the socio-demographic characteristics of individuals, the second part included questions examining the knowledge levels of patients regarding the use of oral anticoagulant drugs. RESULTS: Results: As a result of the study, it was determined that 79.4% of patients were not acquainted with the interaction of oral anticoagulant drugs with other drugs, 86.6% had no document about using the oral anticoagulant drug, 47.4% did not inform the healthcare professionals regarding the use of the oral anticoagulant drug at the hospital and 71.1% were not acquainted with the interaction of oral anticoagulant drugs with nutrients. CONCLUSION: Conclusion: In order to increase the knowledge levels of patients, using oral anticoagulant drugs, regarding the treatment, it could be recommended to enable nurses to pay attention to patient trainings and establish private units for this purpose.
