A straightforward NMR technique which determines the spatial profile of the velocity in laminar fluid flow is described. An improved method is also presented for directly measuring the velocity distribution function. The methods employ a linear magnetic field gradient, which introduces a spatial variation to the nuclear Larmor frequency. Experimental results for the velocity profile of water flow in circular and rectangular pipes are presented, as well as for the velocity distribution function in a circular pipe.
