This review explores the significant role of specialized plant metabolites (SPMs) in the burgeoning field of cosmeceuticals, emphasizing their diverse biological activities and multifunctional benefits for skin health. SPMs, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, and polysaccharides, are recognized for their potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotective, and antimicrobial properties. These compounds are sourced from various plant parts, such as leaves, flowers, roots, and seeds, and have been incorporated into skincare products due to their ability to target skin aging, pigmentation, and acne. The objectives of this review are to provide a detailed and integrative synthesis of the role of specialized plant metabolites (SPMs) in cosmeceuticals. Specifically, the review: (i) explores the chemical diversity, sources, and biological activities of key SPM classes, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, and polysaccharides; (ii) explains their mechanisms of action and benefits for skin health, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective effects; (iii) reviews advances in extraction and isolation methods that preserve bioactivity and improve yield for cosmeceutical use; (iv) discusses challenges in formulation, stability, and bioavailability, while presenting strategies like encapsulation and nanotechnology to address these issues; and (v) assesses clinical evidence on the efficacy and safety of SPM-based cosmeceuticals, proposing future research to enhance sustainability and foster innovation. This review uniquely contributes to the field by offering a comprehensive analysis that bridges biochemical insights with practical applications in cosmeceuticals. It not only synthesizes existing knowledge but also identifies research gaps, such as the need for sustainable production methods and deeper exploration of SPM interactions with skin microbiota, thus charting a path for future innovations. To our knowledge, this is the first review to provide such an extensive, multidimensional exploration of SPMs in cosmeceuticals, offering valuable guidance for researchers and industry stakeholders aiming to develop effective, natural, and sustainable products. • The review highlights the chemical structures, sources, and bioactivity of specialized plant metabolites (SPMs). • SPMs show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective properties. • SPMs are used in cosmeceuticals for skin aging, pigmentation, and acne. • Their mechanisms of action and multifunctional roles in skincare are explored.
