This analysis reveals the interpolation of David’s Testament in Solomon Accession Narrative, clarifying the Shimei Duplicate.
David’s Testament (1Kgs 2:1–9) appears as an episode in the larger Solomon Accession Narrative (1Kgs 1–2). This paper does three things. First, it shows that the Testament is a later interpolation into the Accession Narrative. Second, it shows that this conclusion provides a simple solution to the longstanding problem of the Shimei Duplicate, namely that David instructs Solomon regarding Shimei the Benjaminite in 2:8–9 in all textual witnesses and also in 2:35 l–o in the Septuagint. Third, it offers a complete definition of the original contours of the Solomon Accession Narrative.
