Assesses luminescence properties in organic-inorganic hybrid crystals, suggesting superior performance for TDMP over DMEDA.
Organic–inorganic hybrid crystals with a one-dimensional quantum nanostructure (TDMP)PbBr 4 (TDMP : trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazine) and (DMEDA)PbBr 4 (DMEDA : N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine) were fabricated, and their luminescence properties were investigated for scintillators. The hybrid crystals showed a broadband photoluminescence originating from self-trapped excitons (STE) in the inorganic part, and the obtained quantum yield (49%) upon excitation at 380 nm for the (TDMP)PbBr 4 crystal was higher than that upon excitation at 390 nm for the (DMEDA)PbBr 4 crystal (19%). Their photoluminescence decay times due to STE were 112 ns for the (TDMP)PbBr 4 crystal and 47 ns for the (DMEDA)PbBr 4 crystal. The broadband emission due to STE was also detected under X-ray excitation, and the decay times were comparable to those under visible excitation. In addition, their scintillation light yields were evaluated upon excitation by gamma-rays from 241 Am, being 30000 photons/MeV for the (TDMP)PbBr 4 crystal and 18000 photons/MeV for the (DMEDA)PbBr 4 crystal.
