This concept note introduces the distinction between thinking space and operational space as an organizational framework for the responsible use of generative AI. The thinking space refers to exploration, drafting, comparison, synthesis and hypothesis generation. The operational space refers to binding decisions, accountable action, stable processes and real-world effects. The central argument is that many misunderstandings around generative AI arise when organizations confuse strong performance in the thinking space with operational readiness in the operational space. The note is particularly relevant for AI governance, accountable AI, human oversight, agentic AI, leadership and organizational transformation.
