Key result
Early ≥15% weight loss in T2D is linked to ~14% fewer macrovascular events.

Achieving substantial weight loss (≥15%) early after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis significantly reduces the risk of subsequent macrovascular and microvascular complications.

Does achieving ≥15% weight loss within 2 years of type 2 diabetes diagnosis reduce the risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes?
Hazard Ratio: 0.86 (95% CI 0.81–0.91)
Achieving substantial weight loss (≥15%) early after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis significantly reduces the risk of subsequent macrovascular and microvascular complications.
Johnsen et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in obesity and type 2 diabetes (n=72,480). ≥15% weight loss within 2 years of diagnosis vs. stable weight (<2% weight change) was evaluated on first macrovascular events (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.81-0.91). Achieving ≥15% weight loss within 2 years of type 2 diabetes diagnosis was associated with lower risks of first macrovascular (HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.81-0.91) and microvascular events.
