This analysis explores health implications for trans people in the context of anti-colonial theory, indicating urgent needs for new frameworks.
The current attacks on trans life require us to retheorize how health and the material conditions of life are understood. Taking the recent spate of executive orders as a starting point, the author develops an account of what Eric Stanley describes as “near life” to demonstrate the insufficiency of extant theories of health available in bioethical literature. In contrast, the author turns to the work of anti-colonial theorists like Frantz Fanon and Achille Mbembe to develop an account of what living through the present does to trans people.
