Review explores neural pathways and networks in newborns, highlighting crucial factors for healthy development.
This review synthesizes contemporary evidence from developmental neuroscience, infant neuroimaging, functional connectivity research, and early childhood development to examine how neural pathways emerge and organize during the newborn period. The manuscript explores synaptogenesis, myelination, synaptic pruning, experience-dependent plasticity, early functional network formation, and neural mirroring systems while integrating recent findings from neuroimaging and developmental research. A proposed statistical meta-analytic framework is presented to support future quantitative investigation of associations between environmental factors, neural connectivity, and developmental outcomes. Evidence-informed recommendations related to responsive caregiving, language exposure, secure attachment, sleep, nutrition, and enriched environmental experiences are discussed as factors supporting healthy neurodevelopment and adaptive developmental trajectories.
