Abstract Background Hyperlipidemia is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, yet awareness levels among young adults remain insufficient. University students, often at a transitional life stage, represent a key demographic for preventive health interventions. Objective This study aimed to assess the level of awareness regarding hyperlipidemia among university students and to identify behavioral, demographic, and social factors associated with awareness levels. Methods A structured, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 365 university students from various academic disciplines. The survey encompassed variables related to demographics, lifestyle behaviors, medical history, and hyperlipidemia-related knowledge. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics. Cross-tabulations and proportional analyses were conducted to examine associations between cholesterol awareness levels and key variables such as dietary patterns, sleep duration, and family history of cardiovascular conditions. Results Of the 365 participants, 69.3% demonstrated general awareness of hyperlipidemia. Higher fast food and sugary beverage consumption were associated with lower awareness scores (p = 0.021). Students with a family history of hyperlipidemia showed a higher proportion of good awareness (41.6%) compared to those without (45.2%). Medical students demonstrated significantly higher awareness levels and greater adherence to recommended lifestyle behaviors compared to students from other academic disciplines (47.5% vs. 21.1%; p 0.001). Despite widespread awareness, only 48.2% of participants had undergone cholesterol testing within the past year. Conclusion Cholesterol awareness among university students was moderate, with medical students and those with a family history of cardiovascular conditions demonstrating the highest awareness levels. Students with better awareness also reported healthier dietary behaviors, suggesting that improved knowledge may positively influence lifestyle choices. However, fewer than half had undergone recent cholesterol screening, highlighting the need for targeted educational initiatives and preventive health programs in this population.
