Demonstrates effective ground motion selection for seismic safety assessments, highlighting its practical applications.
The selection and scaling of ground motions is a key step in the seismic assessment of structures, as it directly affects the reliability of nonlinear response analyses and performance-based evaluations. This paper presents PEUSP-beta, a web-based earthquake selection platform linked to a large database of recorded European strong-motion data. The Pan-European Earthquake Selection Platform (PEUSP) extends existing tools by explicitly implementing code-based and structure-specific criteria for ground motion selection, in line with current seismic design and assessment practice. The platform supports one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) selection of the horizontal components of the seismic action, including spectral-shape matching procedures compliant with first- and second-generation Eurocode 8 (EN 1998–1–1:2004 and EN 1998–1–1:2024). In addition to predefined code-based target spectra, PEUSP provides full user control over the selection parameters, allowing the definition of custom target spectra and constraints tailored to specific structural typologies and performance objectives. Scenario-based selection is also implemented, enabling conditioning on seismological parameters such as magnitude, distance, site conditions, and faulting mechanism, when required by advanced performance objectives. The selection process is formulated as an optimisation problem, enabling the efficient identification of ground motion suites that satisfy all imposed constraints while minimising computational effort. PEUSP aims to support the practical application of performance-based seismic assessment and advanced earthquake engineering analysis.
