Abstract Preservation of the hybrid layer is central to achieving long-lasting adhesive restorations, yet collagen degradation and enzymatic activity continue to compromise bond durability. Recent advances in dentin biomodification highlight the value of natural cross-linkers such as proanthocyanidins, hesperidin and quercetin, which enhance collagen stability and suppress matrix metalloproteinases. Alongside protease inhibitors such as chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride and tetracyclines, these agents strengthen the resin–dentin interface and reduce nanoleakage. This narrative review aimed to explore the bioactive approaches to hybrid layer preservation. A comprehensive literature search spanning from 2009 to 2025 was conducted to identify relevant studies. The key findings from these studies showed that emerging strategies – including biomimetic remineralization, ethanol-wet bonding and bioactive adhesive formulations – offer additional pathways to reinforce hybrid layer integrity. Collectively, these approaches represent promising solutions for extending clinical bond longevity.
