Land at Whaddon, Trowbridge, Wiltshire: Archaeological Evaluation

The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 86 trenches: " 84no 30m x 1.8m trenches; " 2no 30m x 1.8 contingency trenches. The trenches were located to test geophysical anomalies and to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. The two contingency trenches were located to further investigate a potential enclosure identified within the geophysical survey and identified within Trenches 19, 20, 29, 40 and 42, as requested by Neil Adam. Trench 19 was shortened to 20m due to its close proximity to a large tree. In August and September 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Whaddon, Trowbridge, Wiltshire. A total of 86 trenches were excavated. The evaluation identified two ditched enclosures of prehistoric date in the western half of the site, corroborating the results of an earlier geophysical survey. In the eastern half of the site a single shallow pit was identified containing a piece of iron-working slag. Former field boundaries and furrows were also recorded throughout the site.
