This article reviews abrasion tests and mechanisms to assess rubber wear, highlighting test methods and factors influencing wear.
Wear on rubber is a complex phenomenon and its development is influenced by many factors. For example, physical properties such as the rubber material and hardness of the opposing materials, characteristics such as roughness, viscoelasticity (speed dependency),and agglutination, surface deposits, inclusions (water, oil, etc., lubrication condition),contact force and coefficient of friction, temperature, humidity, and material transfer due to wear progression, can be mentioned. To determine the wear of rubber, there are many abrasion tests with various contact evaluation methods. In this article, some abrasion test methods to evaluate wear durability of products are explained, and a summary of abrasion types and mechanisms is provided.
