Discussion highlights the link between existing system success and future development intentions across organizations.
The article presents comments in response to the article "Intent to Enhance Information Systems As a Function of System Success," by Andreas I. Nicolaou, Michael M. Masoner, and Robert B. Welker, published in the September 1995 issue of the "Journal of Information Systems." Nicolaou et al. focuses on the relationship of success (benefits of existing systems), perceived benefits of future systems, and the perceived costs of future systems to intentions to develop new systems. The primary contribution is in establishing the relationship between beliefs of decision makers and their intentions to develop future systems. The study investigates an area that has received little prior attention. The notion that the success of existing systems should influence the intentions of decision makers in organizations with regard to the development of new systems has not been investigated before. In the opinion of this article, the use of the generalized cost/benefit measure is an elegant solution to estimating the value of a future project.
