Analysis of faculty promotions reveals differences in rates between quality and other institutions.
Using publicly available information In the Hasselback directory, status changes (defined as promotions and movements between academic institutions) of doctorally qualified U.S. accountIng faculty are examined for the years 1980 to 1987. Institutions are grouped based on presence or absence of several academic quality factors. The percentage of status changes represented by promotions of resident assistant and associate professors is computed for each group and compared. Overall, status changes are as likely to be resident promotions at quality institutions as at other institutions. Associate professor promotion rates at quality Institutions are generally higher than those found at other institutions. Assistant professor promotion rates at quality Institutions are generally lower than those found at other institutions.
