Novel model predictive control efficiently regulates output voltage in a boost converter, suggesting improved performance in high voltage applications.
This article proposes a novel, simplified model predictive control (MPC) scheme for regulating the output voltage of a three-level non-isolated DC-DC boost converter. The proposed topology is based on a single switch DC-DC boost converter with high gain, offering the flexibility to control voltage through a simple and effective method. In this scheme, a cascaded inner current control loop and an outer voltage control loop are employed to achieve efficient regulation of the output voltage and current. The proposed MPC scheme incorporates a cost function based on voltage and current errors, with the associated weighting factor removed to reduce computational complexity and tuning requirements. A key advantage of the proposed scheme is its simplicity, as the output voltage from a conventional boost topology can effectively control the entire output of the converter. This eliminates the need for high-voltage feedback sensors in medium and high voltage applications, enabling quicker and more efficient control. A 125 W rated converter topology was designed and experimentally validated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, confirming that the proposed control scheme delivers high efficiency, robust regulation, and enhanced dynamic response.
