Bibliometric review maps AI and IoT readiness trends in smart buildings, highlighting key research gaps.
The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted growing attention in building operations and facilities management (FM), particularly in relation to smart buildings and data-driven operational practices. However, research on readiness for adopting these technologies remains fragmented and underdeveloped. This study aims to map research trends and identify gaps in AI and IoT readiness in smart buildings. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using data from Scopus and the Web of Science database. Science mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, and trend analysis, were applied to examine the intellectual structure of the field. The results show that IoT and smart building technologies dominate the literature, while AI is emerging as a growing research focus. However, readiness-related concepts are not central in existing studies. The findings indicate that current research is largely technology-driven, with limited attention to organizational and managerial aspects. This highlights the lack of structured frameworks for assessing readiness in facilities management. The study contributes by providing a systematic overview of research trends and identifying key gaps, offering directions for future research on integrated readiness assessment models.
