Examines how spaced training impacts performance in turtles, suggesting new insights into reward effects.
This research is relevant to the comparative of the so-called paradoxical effects of reward,a family of phenomena that has not yet been observed in a variety of experiments with fish, amphibians, and turtles trained under widely spaced conditions. The runway performancd of turtles(Geoclemys reevesii)was studied in a design that allowed an observation of the effects of schedule and magnitude of reinforcement on acquisition and extinction under widely spaced training conditions(one trial per day).Partial reinforcement retarded acquistion but there was no evidence of the partial reinforcement extinction effect commonly observed in rats and pigeons trained under analogous conditions.A shift from a relatively large reward magnitude(5 pellets)to either extinction or to a small magnitude(1 pellet)gave no evidence of either the magnitude of reinforcement extinction effect or the successive negative contrast effect. However, the two magnitudes used in the present experiment failed to produce differential performance before the shift. The importance of a more precise knowledge of the effect of different reward magnitudes on the instrumental performance of turtles was stressed as a prerequisite for further studies.|本研究は報酬に関するいわゆる逆説的効果を比較心理学的に分析したものである。
