Qualitative analysis reveals pathways to antiracism in ex-evangelicals influenced by LGBTQIA+ identities, suggesting theological and political shifts.
Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews with ex-evangelicals, this article highlights the mutually constitutive nature of religion, race, and politics in US evangelicalism. Our term religiopolitics , which refers to the ontological sphere within which religion and politics become indistinguishable, underscores this interdependent relationship among religion, race, and politics. We argue that for many interviewees, identifying as LGBTQIA+ within evangelical spaces led to questioning the sexual politics of evangelicalism and ultimately paved the way for considering the systemic othering of structural racism. In this way, the deconstruction of conservative evangelical beliefs about sexuality often prompted interviewees to adopt antiracist orientations and vice versa. This was as much a theological shift as it was a political one, wherein interviewees’ theologies were drastically restructured once they adopted these antiracist commitments. Ultimately, our data highlights how whiteness is refracted through the sexual religiopolitics of evangelicals. Thus, we suggest that these racialized religiopolitics of evangelicals work to reinforce systemic racism.
