Does percutaneous transarterial embolization improve clinical success and technical success in patients with uterine arteriovenous fistulas?
Transarterial embolization is an effective treatment for uterine arteriovenous fistulas, demonstrating a 100% technical success rate and a 94.4% uterine preservation rate.
Supports embolization as uterine-preserving option for UAVF bleeding; leaves open need for prospective trials on durability and generalizability.
This study aimed to evaluate the technical success, safety, and clinical outcomes of transarterial embolization for uterine arteriovenous fistulas (UAVFs). In this retrospective single-center cohort study, consecutive patients diagnosed with UAVFs and treated with percutaneous transarterial embolization between April 2007 and August 2024 were included. The primary endpoints were clinical success, defined as resolution of uterine bleeding and technical success, defined as complete embolization of the UAVF. Eighteen patients (median age: 36.5 years [range: 23-48 years]) were included. Clinical success was achieved in 94.4% (17/18) of patients, and technical success was achieved in all cases. Repeat embolization was required in three patients, and one patient ultimately underwent hysterectomy. Six patients achieved subsequent pregnancy. In conclusion, transarterial embolization is an effective treatment for UAVFs, demonstrating a 100% technical success rate and a 94.4% uterine preservation rate.

Neto et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in Uterine arteriovenous fistulas (n=18). Percutaneous transarterial embolization was evaluated on Clinical success (resolution of uterine bleeding) and technical success (complete embolization of the UAVF). Transarterial embolization for uterine arteriovenous fistulas achieved a 100% technical success rate and a 94.4% clinical success rate for resolution of uterine bleeding.
