Research applies Multi-Level Perspective to show how standardisation accelerates innovation in socio-technical systems.
The green transition-aimed at climate neutrality. resource efficiency. and ecological resilience-isincreasingly converging with rapid advances in digital technologies such as artificial intelligenceand distributed data infrastructures. This twin transition requires coordinated, large-scalestructural change across technological, institutional, and economic domains. To understand this complex transformation, this research applies the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) on socio-technical transitions (Geels, 2002). The MLP conceptualises transitions as the outcome of interactions between stable socio-technical regimes, emerging niche innovations, and broader landscape pressures (e.g., climate change, digitalisation).Within this framework, standardisation acts as a vital catalyst (Blind, 2009). By reducing socio-technical barriers, ensuring interoperability, and levelling the playing field, standards initiateand accelerate the diffusion of niche innovations, allowing them to mature and successfully disrupt established socio-technical regimes.
