Randomized trial evaluates a symbolic state machine involving plant recipes, implying new interpretations.
The Voynich Manuscript has resisted interpretation for six centuries because every prior approach — cipher, linguistic, hoax — assumed it was a document to be deciphered. It is not. It is a symbolic state machine: 115 plant illustrations encode a pharmaceutical instruction set whose runtime engine is the human operator who reads, processes, and administers them. The pharmacy catalog contains 1,491 entries across 115 folios, each carrying eleven fields that constitute a fixed-width instruction format; the recipe corpus contains 1,076 entries across 28 folios operating on seventeen step primitives. A three-gate verification system — Degeneracy Check, Reactivity Verification, Winding Verification — constitutes the machine’s runtime assertions, halting execution if any gate fails. Three complete execution traces demonstrate the machine’s three supported structural configurations: sequential (Artemisia absinthium), bifurcating (Mandragora officinarum), and disjunctive (Ricinus communis). All three pass all three gates. The remaining plant illustrations are not unidentified species but unexecuted programs.
