Demonstrates high-yield oxidation of alcohols in aqueous micellar conditions, suggesting a new metal-free method.
A metal-free oxidation of mainly secondary and some primary alcohols to their carbonyl derivatives is reported, taking place under aqueous micellar conditions using oxygen as the terminal oxidant. This procedure takes advantage of the commercially available catalyst ABNO together with a co-catalyst salt (NaNO 2 ) in a recyclable and nonflammable aqueous medium. Oxidation of even complex alcohols, including pharmaceuticals and related intermediates, were achieved in high yields.
