Examines stability of pump hydro-storage in microgrids, indicating improved control methods.
Because it decouples the secondary frequency controller and alters the dynamics of the Load Frequency Control (LFC) system in turbine and pump operations, hydraulic pumped hydropower is regarded as a serious current problem. To enable the Pump Hydro-storage (PHS) system to function adequately within interconnected resilient microgrids, the stability challenges are addressed. This could potentially cause instability in power systems that use PHS. The proposed solution turns the problem into a Multi-input Multi-output (MIMO) problem by appropriately designing the closed-loop link between the disturbance and the area control error, using an H ∞ -based methodology to develop robust controllers. A two-microgrid system is examined, with the PHS system situated at one of them. This reflects the influence of the PHS turbine in reducing the system’s over- and undershoots. Numerical simulations show that the proposed H ∞ controllers outperform a number of reported controllers in terms of settling times and several performance indices.
