Explores antifungal efficacy of Fe3+ with natural antioxidants in agricultural fungi, suggesting a safe alternative.
High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Foodborne fungi in agricultural products pose health and economic risks, necessitating the development of safe and effective antifungal solutions. This study explores the use of Fe 3+ in combination with natural antioxidants via the Fenton reaction to inhibit fungal growth. Aspergillus niger was used as a model organism. The Fe 3+ /onion extract mixture significantly suppressed conidial germination and fungal growth in vitro and ex vivo, without damaging onion tissue. Additionally, in vivo tests on infected peanut seeds confirmed the antifungal efficacy of Fe 3+ during seedling development. These findings suggest that Fe 3+ combined with antioxidant-rich plant extracts offers a promising, low-toxicity, and cost-effective strategy for controlling foodborne fungi in agricultural products.
