Under the background of new quality productivity, the field of architectural design is experiencing a subversive transformation, which poses a serious challenge to the talent cultivation mode of traditional higher vocational architectural design majors. This paper researches on the necessary innovation ability of architectural design professionals, proposes an innovation ability cultivation model combining students’ spatial cognition and AI technology, and experimentally verifies the effectiveness of the model based on independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test. The study shows that under the VR design mode, students’ control of spatial dimensions and proportions, etc. is more accurate, and their spatial cognition and design comprehension are significantly improved. Based on this, the experimental group using the model has significantly improved (p<0.05) in terms of the total mean score of innovation ability, the foundation of innovation ability, the innovation spirit, the innovation learning variables, and the dimensions of the application of innovation practice compared with the control group using the traditional method, and the proposed model of innovation ability cultivation meets the needs of the development of new-quality productivity.
