New 3D echocardiographic imaging modalities improve the understanding, diagnosis, and procedural monitoring of mitral valve disease compared to standard 2D modalities.
Why the study?
Do advanced 3D echocardiographic imaging modalities improve the diagnosis and procedural guidance for mitral valve repair compared to standard 2D echocardiography?
Do advanced 3D echocardiographic imaging modalities improve the diagnosis and procedural guidance for mitral valve repair compared to standard 2D echocardiography?
Advanced 3D echocardiography enhances the understanding of mitral valve mechanics and improves clinical decision-making and procedural guidance for structural interventions.
May support refined mitral valve assessment in practice; leaves open need for outcome-validated trials.
New echocardiographic imaging modalities, mainly based on 3D data acquisition, have markedly improved our understanding of the normal and pathologic mitral valve mechanics. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 3D data on the mitral valve could have a clinical impact on diagnosis, patient referral, and percutaneous and surgical strategies, as well as in the evaluation of the immediate and long-term surgical outcome. This review covers the contribution of new echocardiographic imaging modalities in the diagnosis of mitral valve disease, their role in selecting and monitoring percutaneous and surgical procedures, and in the assessment of procedural outcomes. Moreover, advantages versus the standard 2D modality, as well as future applications of advanced analysis techniques, will be presented.

Maffessanti et al. (2013) conducted a review in Mitral valve disease. 3D echocardiographic imaging modalities vs. Standard 2D echocardiography was evaluated. New 3D echocardiographic imaging modalities improve the understanding, diagnosis, and procedural monitoring of mitral valve disease compared to standard 2D modalities.
